Festival Theme - Overview

Chinese New Year Celebration 2007 represents a departure from most other cultural celebration event because the primary focus will be on education rather than just entertainment. The event's program strives to teach the visiting public about the history, traditions and customs of this Chinese holiday. Moreover, with the support from the San Mateo/Foster City Unified School District, the joint effort is to reach a diverse audience of teachers and students, the Arts & Culture committee would provide information stressing the history and values of the holiday as well as fun arts and crafts activities for teachers to integrate into their classroom curriculum. Overall, the City of Foster City would like to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of America 's diverse heritage by preserving, and sharing the history, rich cultural legacy, and continuing contributions of Chinese Americans.

Themed "Temple Fair", Chinese New Year Celebration 2007, will spotlight a Chinese American re-creation of a traditional village street fair. With dazzling displays of luminous decoration serving as the backdrop, the event will feature exciting musical, acrobatic and lion dance performances, the traditional tea ceremony, the time-honored tradition of tea drinking and the ancient art of feng shui can be intimately explored with the help of tea instructors and feng shui masters available on-site at the event, vibrant live demonstration of Chinese Celestial Horse brush painting, art exhibitions, animated storytelling in Chinese, and English, Chinese-opera style face painting, the 12 Chinese zodiacs animals' characters will also be featured at the celebration to help greet children and parents. Visitors are encouraged to bring their cameras to snap a fun photo with this lovable Zodiacs character! Additionally, a variety of enriching workshops showcasing traditional Chinese arts and crafts will be present as well. Here, visitors may try their hand at Chinese calligraphy, flora pattern designs, Chinese knot-tying and paper-cutting, clay figurine making, and paper folding. And to cap off the day, a joyful dance where children and their families are welcome to participate with dancers and musicians in the water front Lagoon room.
